Katherine Hastie was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1948. Grew up on a former plantation with acres of open fields and abandoned slave dwellings. In 1970, she received her BA from the College of Charleston and later studied at the Pratt Institute in Italy in 1985. She has additional training from Lorenzo de Medici in Florence and the Ruskin School.
